Jo Koy’s real name is Joseph Glenn Herbert.
He derived his stage name from a childhood nickname given to him by his family.
He explained this to his audience in a stand-up routine in Phoenix, Arizona on the 22nd of September, 2019.
Jo Koy told them that in 1989, he was discussing a stage name with his cousin when his aunt summoned him to dinner, saying “Jo Ko, eat!”
This is translated as “my” in Tagalog for Ko and so “Jo Ko” means “my Jo” which he mispronounced as “Koy.”

Jo Koy dropped out of university to pursue a career as a stand-up comedian, and in 1994 he joined a Las Vegas comedy theater group.
He then proceeded on to participate in the open mic night for the program Catch a Rising Star at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.
Soon, Jo Koy took the initiative to grow his career by renting the Huntridge Theater and began performing there.
This was after he was discovered by a talent facilitator from Los Angeles who awarded him his first TV break on the BET’s Comic View.
